Michael Brea's going to need a good shield.

The New York actor accused of hacking his mother to death with a sword has been officially charged with second-degree murder. He did not enter a plea when he was arraigned Friday from the hospital prison ward where he's been undergoing a psych evaluation since the Nov. 23 slaying.

Brea, who had small roles in Ugly Betty and Step Up 3-D, wove a whole "I killed the demon inside her" theory for the New York Daily News, but prosecutors apparently aren't buying it.

"I didn't kill her. I killed the demon inside her," Brea told the Daily News from Bellevue Hospital. "So be it. It was the work of God."

Brea is accused of killing mom Yannick Brea, 55, in the bathroom of their family's apartment in Brooklyn's Prospect Heights.

The 31-year-old told the paper a few days later that he had been at the Prince Hall Masonic Temple in Harlem the afternoon before his mom's death when he received a "sign."

A man approached him, he said, and "kept trying to put something in my hand but wouldn't show it to me. I kept opening my hand. It was a Freemason pin. I wouldn't touch it." Then, on the train back to Brooklyn, "like Neo from The Matrix" he "began hearing voices and feeling powerful.

"They were asking about the difference between mom and mother. It was a sign."

Brea's attorney didn't offer a comment, perhaps because he's really busy.

In addition to second-degree murder, the actor is also charged with criminal possession of a weapon. His next court date is Dec. 18.

"His family and friends know, without question, that Michael was not well in the moments leading to Yannick's death," relatives said in a statement after the killing.
