Video editor Dave Gostisha and movies editor Gael Fashingbauer Cooper love movie trailers. Each Thursday, they'll highlight one for an upcoming film.
Dave says: "Chipwrecked," the upcoming 3-D movie starring the animated rodents, is the kind of movie you will be dragged to by unsuspecting children. Make sure to keep a music player in your coat, and maybe even a pillow handy.
Gael says: How have I been kept blissfully unaware that Jason Lee plays the Chipmunks' human dad? Oh man, he’s fallen so far from the awesome “My Name Is Earl.”
Dave says: I think the other actors involved — yes, I’m pointing fingers at you, Christina Applegate, Alyssa Milano, Amy Poehler and Justin Long — knew this would be an easy paycheck. Show up for some voice work in their sweats, a quick theatrical release, and then off to DVD no-man’s-land.
Gael says: And is that Phyllis Smith from "The Office" as a stewardess?
Dave says: Phyllis thought to herself, "the golden chalice of easy money is being offered to a supporting actor, I’d be a fool to pass this up."
Gael says: I was going to say I don’t know which song is the worst, but I’ve watched it three times now and that would be a lie. The worst song is definitely when the Chipettes (female Chipmunks) wag their butts into the camera and sing “I Whip My Tail Back and Forth.” It’s like under-the-fingernails bamboo torture when they start singing and wagging.
Dave says: If the clichés in the trailer are any indication, it’s going to make the run time seem like a full day’s work.
Gael says: They make sure to insert brief parodies of eight million better movies (slow-motion action from “The Matrix,” escaping giant boulder from “Indiana Jones”) so you will be reminded that you’re not watching one of those movies. And it comes out Dec. 16, the day after my birthday! I think I'll give myself the gift of not seeing it.
