Video editor Dave Gostisha and movies editor Gael Fashingbauer Cooper love movie trailers. Each Thursday, they'll highlight one for an upcoming film.
Gael says: I admit it, I've always been an Avengers fan — none of this Justice League or America for me! And while straight-arrow Captain America's my secret crush, in the long-awaited trailer for "The Avengers," it's Robert Downey as Iron Man's alter ego Tony Stark who steals the show. "No offense but I don't play well with others," he snarks, and he's right, and that's why he's awesome. (He later gives a backhanded compliment to David Banner's Hulk persona which cracked me up.) Big props, too, to Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, the poor fool who's responsible for wrangling all these super-sized egos and problems and making them work together. He's gotta feel a little like a preschool teacher and also a lot like a cat herder.
Dave says: I must be the only person who wasn’t into ‘The Avengers” when I was growing up. That must have been when I was enjoying my zombie comic books and Mad and Cracked magazines. From the trailer, it appears Loki (Thor’s brother, also a god) is up to no good. Loki throws some laser bolts, apparently gets apprehended at some point (giving a sly smile while escorted through Avenger HQ?), and gets to throw Tony Stark, minus his suit, out a window. It looks like good clean fun, but when Tony Stark gives Captain America a tongue-lashing, did the laugh line really need to be punched up by Thor, since fans would know Stark’s ego would create conflict with everyone? I’ve endured just about all of the uneven crop of hero movies, here’s hoping that this movie delivers on the promise that’s been building up, seemingly for years.
