Sadly, once again, critical acclaim cannot overcome rock-bottom ratings: FX has canceled Terriers, after just one low-rated, artistically well-received season. Awww, goodbye Hank (Donal Logue) and Britt (Michael Raymond-James)!

What did the cast and crew have to say about the news? We've got the dish, including exclusive word from beloved Jossverse alum Tim Minear.

Plus, in other series cancellation news, what just happened to Maura Tierney's comeback vehicle, The Whole Truth on ABC?

Terriers--set in fictional Ocean Beach, Calif., and following the exploits of two semipro detectives who split their time between lounging and investigating local lowlifes--pulled in an average of 700,000 viewers for the show's 13-episodes run.

In response to the news, executive producer Shawn Ryan tweeted, "Thanks for all the condolences, #Terriers fans. Ultimately, we couldn't get enough people to watch. Don't blame FX. They're still 1st class."

Meanwhile, fellow executive producer Tim Minear tells us exclusively, "Let me quote [creator] Ted Griffin, possibly the classiest act I've ever worked with: When Ted, Shawn and I were in [FX president] John Landgraf's office on Friday and Landgraf was going through the numbers with us (this was, by the way, the first time in my experience that a network president has gone to the trouble to really put the creative team on the inside of the sad process), at some point Ted stopped John--who was clearly very distressed at having to be 'the bad guy'--to say, 'This experience has been nothing but a win/win for me.' Ted talked about how proud he was of the show, of the cast and the crew and staff, and how we felt we'd made the thing we set out to make. I'm four square with Ted Griffin on this. This was a great experience for me--getting to work with Shawn Ryan again and meeting and working with Ted--not to mention the cast--Donal and Michael in particular are amazing artists--and the relationship with FX was bracing and creatively terrific. No regrets. I've been cancelled more times than a Whitney Houston comeback tour, but this was the most painful and the most painless all at the same time."

FX canceled Damages for similarly low ratings earlier this year (it was subsequently picked up for two seasons by DirecTV), but the male-oriented cable network has also recently found brand-expanding success with smash hits Sons of Anarchy and Justified.

Meanwhile, ABC has officially pulled courtroom procedural The Whole Truth from the schedule. The series, which costarred Rob Morrow and Maura Tierney, floundered in the ratings early. All 13 ordered episodes of the series went before the camera, but only six aired on the ABC network in the official Wednesday at 10 p.m. time slot. Two of ABC's half-hour comedies will air at that time beginning Wednesday, Dec. 8. No word on where or when the remaining produced installments of the series might appear.
