James Earl Jones is a serious actor with a serious voice, one deep and foreboding enough to bring Darth Vader to life in the original "Star Wars" trilogy. But the venerable star of stage and screen has a silly side too, which he — with some help from Boyd Gaines, his co-star from the Broadway play "Driving Miss Daisy" — shared during a Friday morning visit to TODAY.
"What does the redneck Jedi say?" Gaines asked the actor.
"Now you ask me because I'm a redneck or a Jedi?" Jones shot back.
Gaines assured him they were "both rednecks," which prompted Jones to finally deliver the punchline.
"Luke, I am your father ... and your uncle," he deadpanned as Studio 1A broke out in laughter.
See more from Jones and Gaines as their Broadway show heads to the big screen. "Driving Miss Daisy," a film of the stage production — not to be confused with the Oscar-winning 1989 movie of the same name — hits select theaters June 4.
