Julie Taymor, the director of the beleaguered -- and expensive -- Broadway production of "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" woke up to news of her imminent firing Wednesday morning, if the numerous reports are to be believed. But for now, the production refuses to acknowledge any of the speculation and continues to redirect the conversation to the show's success in selling tickets.

"The production is not commenting on the most recent speculation about the show," spokesperson Rick Miramontez told TODAY.com. "There are no canceled performances, and last night's show was sold out."

Despite swift ticket sales, which have been consistent since the show began previews late last year, a number of media outlets reported overnight Tuesday that Taymor's reign over the $65 million production is untenable. Critics' widespread panning of the show, the safety issues and creative issues that led to delaying the opening five times (it's official opening is now March 15), have all reportedly contributed to a creative impasse between Taymor and producers Michael Cohl and Jeremiah Harris.

A source close to the show says that the financial interests of the show and Taymor's personal interests are clashing. "They need to make money from this show. That means the production has to have longevity to begin to become profitable. Julie just doesn't want this to go down as the biggest failure of her career. There's a lot at stake for both sides," said a source familiar with the situation.
