Sarah Michelle Gellar arrives at the TCA Party for CBS, The CW and Showtime at The Pagoda in Beverly Hills, Calif., on August 3.

Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar confirmed on Thursday at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour in Los Angeles that she will indeed be appearing on “All My Children” before it signs off of ABC this fall.

“I can officially confirm I will be doing a guest spot,” Gellar said. "When I first heard the show was canceled, I didn’t understand. It just doesn’t make sense to me. I called (casting director) Judy Blye Wilson ... and said, 'I want to do something.' "

Gellar doesn't know yet what role she will be playing, but she does know who she won't be playing.

"I was very specific," the actress said. "I don’t want to be Kendall (Hart). That’s Alicia (Minshew's) role." Gellar first played Kendall, the daughter of Susan Lucci's Erica Kane, from 1993 to 1995. Minshew took over the role in 2002.

Gellar's return to "AMC" and the upcoming premiere of her new CW drama, "Ringer," bring her back to the small screen. She took a break after "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" wrapped in 2003.

"I was very burnt out after 'Buffy.' It was exhausting," she explained. "I was essentially 18 on the pilot and 24 and married when we finished. I had never had time. That show was my life."

The actress explained that being a mother has a lot to do with her signing on for "Ringer," in which she plays a twin who assumes her sister's identity to escape the dangers of her own life.

"Once I had my daughter, I realized that I was done living the nomadic lifestyle," Gellar said. "Although it works for some actors, I want to be home. I want to put her to bed and get up with her in the morning. I want to be there for her first day of school. And nothing offers that more than television. And what’s been so distinct getting back into it was I didn’t know how much I’d missed it."

“All My Children's” final episode on ABC airs Sept. 23. The long-running soap will later move to an online-only network.
