It takes a day or so for the Golden Globes nominations to really sink in -- after all, they span so many genres. But initial reactions are bubbling to the surface. Here they are, in three bite-size pieces.

Nominations I love:

Al Pacino's best actor nomination for “You Don’t Know Jack,” the fantastic HBO film brought to life by director Barry Levinson. If you haven’t seen this fascinating interpretation of Jack Kevorkian’s plight, be sure to check it out before the Globes. Also, Jennifer Love Hewitt's best actress nomination for "The Client List." Hewitt is one of those actresses who quietly goes about her work, often flying under the radar with fantastic performances (her turn as a rape victim in "Law & Order" is one such example). She's getting much-deserved attention with her nomination in "The Client List."

Nominations that have me scratching my head:

Nods for "The Tourist" and "Burlesque" seem a little gratuitous. Where there's star power, there are nominations, this seems to say. Neither film was groundbreaking, and neither were platforms for their actors' best work.

Nominations that are well deserved, in tough categories:

Best TV comedy nominees include "Glee," "30 Rock," "Big Bang Theory," "The Big C," "Modern Family" and "Nurse Jackie." Personally, I think "Nurse Jackie" is the weakest among the pack, but to choose among the remaining five? This is a time I wish vote tallies were made public, because I think it's going to be a near-dead heat. The same applies to the best actor in a drama category with Jon Hamm, Steve Buscemi, Michael Cranston, Hugh Laurie and Michael C. Hall. It's anybody's game.
