Access Hollywood has confirmed that police have opened an investigation into assault with a deadly weapon after Leonardo DiCaprio "made a crime report," stemming from an incident over the weekend where Leo was allegedly struck with a glass bottle outside of a party being held at the house of Rick Salomon.

According to LAPD, there was no 911 call because Leo called the Hollywood sub station the following day.

DiCaprio was hit with a bottle while attending a party given by Paris Hilton's ex-boyfriend and needed about a dozen stitches to close a wound near his ear, People magazine originally reported on its Web site.

The magazine said DiCaprio was at a party at about 4 a.m. Friday at the home of Salomon when a woman allegedly struck him with what appeared to be a beer bottle. Friends took the actor to a hospital where he received about a dozen stitches, People said.

The attack was not expected to affect DiCaprio's work on a Martin Scorsese movie, "The Departed," which is shooting in Boston and New York, People said.

According to police, as a result of the assault, Leo suffered a laceration to the left side of his neck, requiring several sutures.

The investigation is ongoing and no one is in custody at this time. The motive is unknown.
