Still surprised by last week’s “American Idol” results? You’re not alone.

While judges, fans and celebrity supporters struggle to make sense of Pia Toscano’s early exit, and a determined few try to reverse it, the singer admits that even she hasn’t figured out why it was her time to leave the “Idol” stage behind.

During a Tuesday morning visit to TODAY, Toscano shared her thoughts on her ouster and how such a shocker might be avoided in the future.

“I mean, there are a lot of female fans that voted for the boys, but you really don’t know,” Toscano said as she reflected on why she didn’t drum up enough fan support. “You’ve just got to go out there every single week and give 110 percent and just be happy with your performance.”

But following that plan didn’t keep the judges’ favorite in the competition. That’s why there’s now talk of a possible change in the way America gets its “Idols” next season. Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe recently revealed his idea that fans pick the bottom three, while the panel decides who stays and who goes.

It’s an idea that appeals to “Idol’s” latest ousted contestant.

“(That change) may have (saved me) — I really can’t say,” Toscano considered. “But I think the judges should have a say, you know?”

Of course, any change to “Idol” comes too late for Toscano, and that’s fine by her. She’s looking at the bright side of getting booted from the competition.

“I’ve tried to spin it in a positive way — that this is God’s plan,” Toscano explained. “It’s a blessing in disguise. It’s opened so many doors for me, so I have no regrets whatsoever.”

Despite reports to the contrary, there is one door the experience hasn’t opened for her yet. The singer claims she still hasn’t signed a recording contract.

“Well, I’ve been so busy that we really haven’t talked about anything yet,” Toscano said. “We’re just focusing on the (upcoming “American Idol”) tour right now. And whatever opportunities come my way, I’ll take it!”
