Television host Pat O’Brien says he didn’t escape into alcohol rehabilitation to avoid embarrassing stories about obscene telephone calls he made that were circulating on the Internet.
“I fled because I was dying,” O’Brien said. “Thank God on some level this happened, and I’m not dead.”
O’Brien, host of the entertainment news program “The Insider,” spoke to television’s Dr. Phil McGraw in a prime-time special that airs Wednesday on CBS. The network released excerpts of the interview Tuesday.
Asked why nobody he trusted was able to alert him that he was self-destructing, O’Brien said, “I was out of control.”
“I started drinking in the late ’60s,” he said. “I kept drinking.”
