Oscar-nominated French director Jean-Jacques Beineix will head the competition jury at one of Asia's top film festivals this year, organizers said Tuesday.

Pusan International Film Festival organizers said in a statement that the panel also includes Turkish director Yesim Ustaoglu, Thai filmmaker Pen-ek Ratanaruang, Taiwanese actress Terri Kwan and South Korean cinematographer Kim Hyung-koo.

The panel will hand out the South Korean festival's top New Currents Award, given annually to a promising young Asian filmmaker with a cash prize of $30,000.

Beineix is best known for his 1986 drama "Betty Blue." The drama about the romance between an aspiring novelist and a former waitress was nominated for best foreign film at the Oscars and the Golden Globe Awards.

The 14th Pusan International Film Festival is scheduled to take place Oct. 8 through 16.
