Organ swaps don’t go smoothly on ‘Grey’s’

The sisterhood of no pants: Sex kicked off the episode as Callie and Hahn — as Callie explained it to Sloan the next day — “did it, sort of.” Callie despaired, though, that she was unable to venture into some of the unexplored territories she discussed with Bailey last week, because it felt “clinical.” McSteamy balked, not eager to hear about unsatisfying girl-on-girl action. Eventually, Callie talked him into giving her some lessons, and she gained enough confidence to utter to Hahn those tender words everyone longs to hear: “Drop your pants.”

Extra credit: Awkwardness flared between Derek and Meredith after an article about their clinical trial — on which she arguably took the lead — credited only him for the work. After condescending to her for most of the episode about how he’d try to get her credited even though he didn’t think a lowly resident deserved it, Derek took some advice from Bailey and actually thanked her. He also gave her a kidney in a jar, which pleased her, because Meredith remains deeply odd.

Hospital doings: That kidney came from Bailey’s massive “domino”-style transplant, involving six donors and six recipients and a complex swap. Five donors were the loved ones of recipients, while one seemed to be a simple Good Samaritan.

The first complication: One donor, Greedy Son, turned out to be donating only because his estranged father promised him $10,000. That would render the surgery unethical if the hospital “knew,” so Izzie and Alex decided it was a Christmas gift. That’s the ticket.

The second complication: Our Good Samaritan donor, Generous Blonde, turned out to be the mistress of Faithless Husband, a sick recipient whose official contribution to the swap was a kidney from his Loyal Wife. When she found out about the affair, Loyal Wife dropped out, stopping the swap (since the donors would all back out of donating to strangers if the complicated trade fell apart). Loyal Wife, however, came around after a talking-to from Bailey.

Oops: The surgery went forward, hitting its only snag when Meredith dumped one of the kidneys on the floor, causing Bailey to holler, “Five-second rule!” as you would with a dropped cookie. With that, the Meredith Ruins Everything theory of the universe gained traction. When the abused kidney came through the ordeal, all looked well.

Uh-oh: After surgery, Greedy Son’s father deteriorated, while Generous Blonde sadly realized that Faithless Husband wasn’t interested her post-op condition, leading her to conclude that this might not be the best way to test a married man’s love. Alex bullied Greedy Son into reconciling with his dad; Generous Blonde had no such reversal.

Miscellany: In other news, Lexie finally hollered at George for taking her for granted. Izzie confronted Alex, repeating that she cared about him until he had no choice but to make out with her with great vigor. And Cristina lamented the lack of good men at the bar, only to find that Dr. McArmy — Kevin McKidd’s rebellious doc from the season opener — had returned.
