Ed Norton is happy for his ex-girlfriend, Salma Hayek, whose “Ugly Betty” series for ABC has become a first-year hit for ABC.

In an interview with Mexico City’s Reforma newspaper, the actor said the show is “marvelous” and that he would like to appear in it.

“I’m really happy for Salma. She deserves it,” he said in quotes printed in Spanish.

The Mexican actress stars in and produces the show, which is based on a popular Spanish-language telenovela from Colombia, “Yo soy Betty la Fea,” or “I Am Ugly Betty.”

Norton was in Mexico to promote his new film “The Painted Veil,” a story about a love triangle in 1920s China adapted from the novel by W. Somerset Maugham. Norton stars in the film along with Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber.

Norton, who recently starred in the “The Illusionist,” dated Hayek from 1999-2003.

“Ugly Betty” stars actress America Ferrera as a plain New York City girl who pushes her way into the fashion world.

Adaptations of the original Colombian series have been broadcast by TV stations in Israel, India, Germany, Russia and Spain, among other countries.
