The popularity of folk music may have waxed and waned since Bob Dylan famously went electric at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965, but the event itself is as successful as ever.

The two-day outdoor festival gets under way Saturday at Fort Adams State Park. The event is sold out for the first time in its more than 50-year-history.

Headliners this year include Emmylou Harris, the Decemberists, Gillian Welch, and Elvis Costello.

Several lesser-known bands and musicians will also perform in what has become an iconic celebration of folk, rock, country and independent music.

Following the folk festival is next week's Newport Jazz Festival.
