It's been only six months since actor Michael C. Hall put away his knives and plastic sheeting and left "Dexter" behind, but fans of the show are already clamoring for more from prime-time's favorite serial killer. But is the man behind the murderer-with-a-code eager to reprise the part?

On Tuesday, Hall stopped by TODAY and addressed the recent spin-off buzz.

"It's something that I can't even begin to wrap my head around at this point," he admitted to TODAY's Savannah Guthrie.

But former "Dexter" bigwigs, including Showtime president David Nevins, can wrap their heads around it — under one condition: Hall has to be on board.

"I'll plead the fifth," the star said.

The mystery remains, but for now, Hall is only too happy to leave the death-heavy plots of "Dexter" (and "Six Feet Under" before that) behind him in favor of his new role in the Broadway production of "The Realistic Joneses."

"(It's) good to get out of the death business," Hall explained. "You know, when you make an open-ended commitment to a character for a long period of time, it's nice if there's a lot of complexity and opportunity for evolution. But, yeah, it's nice to do something that is perhaps a bit lighter, and it's really great to get that feedback from the audience every night."

"The Realistic Joneses" opens on Broadway April 6.
