For the first time ever, the Dancing With the Stars franchise has a same-sex couple hitting the dance floor.

It's Israeli TV personality and sports journalist Gili Shem Tov and professional dancer Dorit Milman. They begin competing later this month on the Israeli version of the international dance hit originally launched in the U.K. by the BBC.

Tov calls the partnership "unique."

"I have realized that dance is about coordination and energy between two people, whether female or male. The challenge to dance with a woman in a public contest interested me because it's unique and has never been done before," she said. "Because I share my life with a woman and have a family with her, to me this is the most natural thing to do."

The producer of the show, Asaaf Gil, said he was "proud" to have a same sex couple and hoped other versions of the show would follow their lead.

The winner of the latest season will be picked in January 2011 by public vote.

As for who will take the traditional male role of leading? The couple will share the duty on this one.
