"Mad Men" star Rich Sommer, who plays Harry Crane, nearly had me hitting the booze at my desk earlier today when he hinted that the hit AMC show might not return for a fifth season.

Sommer had tweeted, "GUYS. I have no idea if there will be a season 5 of MM. I am operating under the assumption that there won't be, until I hear otherwise."

He went on to explain, "Contract and pickup are two different things. We have not been picked up yet for our fifth season by either AMC or Lionsgate."

After some likely panic from fans and followers (me included), the actor posted a "major clarification" on his blog: "I am aware that all parties involved are currently negotiating the next season of Mad Men and beyond. Nothing official has been stated yet as far as a pickup, although it is a safe bet — very safe bet — that the show will return in its usual fashion."

Whew! At least fans can still safely hope that next summer, we'll find out whether Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce survives, if Joan has her baby and whether Don really gets married.
