In an interview with ladies fashion magazine Elle, conducted before Lindsay Lohan was arrested on her first suspected DUI charge, the actress told the magazine she would never drive drunk.
Lohan made the statement in the revealing cover story, due to hit stands Aug. 14, after being asked about the paparazzi that follow her everywhere. She segued into the topic of drunk driving after first answering whether she could see her way to her car, through the dozens of flashbulbs going off as she left various locales.
“It’s scary. I can’t (see with all the light bulbs flashing). And they’re looking for me to, like, trip, so they can be like, ‘Oh, Lindsay’s wasted and driving drunk.’ And that’s not it. I wouldn’t violate … I’m much more responsible than that. I would not do that,” she told Elle. “You know what the worst thing is? They’re making money off it! It’s like, why don’t the celebrities make money (from the photos)? It’s not right, the fact that someone is making money off you enjoying your time.”
As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, Lohan was arrested twice on suspected DUI charges this year. Both incidents happened following the magazine's interview.
The second, and most recent arrest, happened in the early hours of July 24 by Santa Monica Police. Lohan refused to submit to a breathalyzer at the scene, but failed other field sobriety tests, authorities said.
After being taken to jail, Lohan’s blood alcohol level measured a .12 (California’s legal limit is .08). Police allege a “usable amount” of cocaine was found in her pocket.
Following her arrest, photo agency X17 claimed Lohan had recently tried to broker a deal with them for $30,000. X17 said they turned down the offer.
Despite Lohan’s complaints about the paparazzi and the alleged deal she failed to strike with them, Lohan refuted suggestions she should stay away from spots where she’s bound to get photographed.
“I hate it, like, when these people say, ‘Well, why do you go to the Ivy if you don’t want …’ Seriously, I like their food! I can’t go to a restaurant,” she told ELLE. “I know I’m going to get pictures taken. I’m fine with it. And I’m going to go have their food. People give you sh-- for it: ‘Don’t go on Robertson!’ What, I can’t drive down the street?”
Lohan said she is also torn by the attention she receives. Though she refuses to have her life dictated by the paparazzi, she said the constant media attention makes her feel guilty.

“I feel like the a--hole, the idiot, because I feel like I’m distracting from the other things that are important, like global warming and that kind of stuff,” she said. “I genuinely mean that. And I don’t know what to do.”
Lindsay’s second arrest came just days after she left Promises, the second rehab stay she’s undergone since January. Lohan addressed with ELLE her first rehab stint — at L.A.’s Wonderland, which she seemed to suggest was more about getting away than getting help.
“I was growing up and going out a lot, and I needed to have a balance. I was glad I went, because I needed to get away from everyone and I didn’t know how to do that,” Lohan said. “And I learned a lot there. A bunch of my friends — I was with them last night — they’re in AA for, like, years.”
Shortly before she made her second rehab trip, this time to Malibu’s Promises, a now famous photo of a slumped over, snoozing Lindsay was splashed across the cover of papers like the New York Post. In the driver’s seat was celebrity DJ Samantha Ronson. Not long after, internet rumors abounded suggesting Lohan was dating her skinny, late-20-something friend.
“They said I was dating my best friend — the Samantha Ronson thing,” Lohan sighed. “She’s my best friend!”
Though not revealing the full extent of their relationship, Lohan also tackled the topic of British model and ladies’ man Calum Best, the last person she appeared to have a romantic liaison with, prior to her second rehab stint.
“I like him,” Lohan said. “He’s me in male form. We’re very similar. Stubborn, rebellious, very smart, coy, a little bit narcissistic ... We’ll be kidding around, like the other day when we were in the Bahamas ... I was walking by some mirror. And he caught me looking in the mirror and he goes, ‘I caught that!’ I was like, ‘Damn, I look good!’ ”
Lohan also finally addressed her panty-free incident last summer, where photographers captured her and her then boyfriend Harry Morton, exiting a boat.
“It was once, and it was when I was in Venice. And I was rushing through the room, threw the Prada dress on. And that’s what happened,” she claimed. “I didn’t even see the picture. I don’t look at that sh-- — that’s gross. If I wear a dress I have underwear on.”
