It was homecoming time on Today this morning, when Matt Lauer's once--and, if tabloid rumors are to be believed, possibly future--cohost Katie Couric returned to Studio 1A.

And she brought a pretty big elephant with her into the room.

Ostensibly there to discuss her new essay advice book, it didn't take long for the duo to discuss Couric's television future and tackle the rumors that have arisen in advance of her contract ending at the CBS Evening News.

So, was she saving the biggest scoop for her old pals at NBC?

Not so much, as it turns out.

Lauer and Couric, in fact, never addressed the biggest rumor hovering around the both of them, namely that if and when (and most tabloids seem to have opted for "when") she leaves her nightly post, she will be taking on a syndicated talk show to be cohosted by none other than Matt himself (whose own issues with contract negotiations have recently surfaced).

Though that's not to say they didn't dance around the topic quite knowingly.

"Heard any good rumors lately?" Lauer laughingly asked Couric, who responded with some wink, wink, nudge, nudging of her own.

"No, have you?" she replied.

After a few moments, Lauer jumped into the not-quite hard-hitting questions, asking if she had made a decision about her future.

"I'm not sure, I'm really excited about the future. I love doing my job at the CBS Evening News, I really do, and I'm just in the middle of figuring it out," she explained. "I just don't know."

Lauer pressed on, noting that since she has just a few weeks left on her contract, is it possible she had already made a decision but just had yet to make it public?

"No, I really haven't," Couric replied. "I'm in the middle of figuring it out...Where would be the best place for me, what would be the best job for me."

Which, she said, might end up being her current job after all.

"I'm gonna call you as soon as I know," she joked.

While discussing her potential future, however, Couric seemingly confirmed that a syndicated talk show (cohosted or not) was in fact a career move she was considering.

"Just the creative freedom to pick subjects, to really dig deep, to have a smart and intelligent conversation...It might be nice to have a little more wiggle room for me to show my personality," she said.

As for when she might finally make a decision, Couric said she hoped an announcement would be forthcoming in "the next few weeks."

"It's important for everyone, I think, to move forward, so I'm hoping soon."

So might another CBS colleague. Well, former colleague.

"As the speculation continues, the longer it goes on, the more headlines that are in the paper, the more time being taken away and space being taken away from important things...like Charlie Sheen," Lauer said.

"That's true," Couric laughed. "I need to give the headlines back to Charlie. I feel bad about that."

She may feel bad, but we have a feeling plenty of people are thankful for the reprieve. Take all the time you need, Katie.
