The crazed screams coming from Rockefeller Plaza on Monday morning for YouTube sensation Austin Mahone brought back childhood memories for Kathie Lee and Hoda, who recalled teenaged versions of themselves and a time when hormones raged.
“Mine still are but in a different way,” Kathie Lee quipped. “It’s not as much fun now, that’s for sure.”
Mahone fans lined up as early as Saturday to ensure a good spot for the 17-year-old singer’s TODAY performance, reminding the ladies of some other heartthrobs: The Beatles.
“I do remember seeing, ‘A Hard Day’s Night,’ and I said to myself, ‘I’ll never be one of those girls that scream,” KLG recalled. “Bull! Bull!”
KLG admitted how she swooned for Dino Martin, the son of Dean Martin and a lead in the group, “Dino, Desi and Billy.”
“Gorgeous kid,” Kathie Lee said.
Hoda said she had two childhood musical obsessions, including the Jackson 5, whose every song she memorized.
“And then on the completely other side, I had a big poster of Barry Manilow,” she admitted.
“Who didn’t,” KLG said.
Mahone seemed like a “sweet kid,” but the reaction he caused is nothing new, KLG noted.
“It’s lovely to have Austin Mahone with us, but this is nothing new under the sun,” she said. “I’m sure in cave man days, there was a little guy with a cute face who could sing a good tune. All the little cave girls are going, ‘aaahh.’”
