Johnny Depp's Rango did OK, probably. Matt Damon's The Adjustment Bureau did OK, probably. And Topher Grace's Take Me Home Tonight didn't make the Top 10, definitely.
The weekend box-office results:
Depp's not-cheap CGI toon topped the standings with $38 million. That's better than what Gnomeo &Juliet led with a few weeks back, but a million miles away from the film Depp launched a year ago this weekend: Alice in Wonderland.
So, yeah, it was another lousy weekend for Hollywood.
Get this: The Top 10 films combined barely surpassed the $116.1 million Friday-Sunday posted last year by Alice in Wonderland.
Like most CGI family films, the final verdict on Rango is to be determined at a later date, as these kind of movies tend to hang in there, weekend after weekend.
It also was too soon to tell if Damon's The Adjustment Bureau ($20.9 million) nudged Damon out of a two-year box-office drought, a period marked by the money-losers Invictus, Green Zone and Hereafter. (He was in the hit True Grit, too, obviously, but that was hardly a Matt Damon movie.) The thriller reportedly cost its distributor $62 million; its overall worldwide total stands at the half-way-home point: $31.4 million.
Grace's retro comedy Take Me Home Tonight was a modest thing of modest means (with a budget said to be under $20 million). But it's debut was a disaster. The film opened in 11th place, grossing just $3.5 million, and averaging less than $1,750 per screen.
Beastly, the weekend's other major new release, got a lot more bang from its likewise modest buck: The reportedly $17 million Beauty and the Beast redo with Vanessa Hudgens grossed $10.1 million.
Elsewhere, last weekend's No. 1 film, Hall Pass ($9 million), held up OK; while last weekend's bomb, Nicolas Cage's Drive Angry ($2.2 million), crashed out of the Top 10 after just one weekend. Per Box Office Mojo, the 3-D action flick has grossed just about $13.5 million worldwide.
