Years ago, before Jimmy Fallon married and became a proud papa of two little girls, and long before Nicole Kidman swapped vows with country music star Keith Urban, the two almost made a love connection.

So what stood in their way back in the day? The fact that Fallon was completely clueless.

On Tuesday night, Kidman stopped by "The Tonight Show" for a revealing stroll down memory lane.

It all revolved around a meet-up that took place when Kidman was working on "Bewitched" in 2005. A friend arranged for the pair to get together, for what Fallon thought was a chat about a possible role in the film.

"So Rick, our mutual friend, says to me, 'Oh, Jimmy wants to meet you, and you can go over to his apartment,'" the Oscar winner recalled. "And I'm single, and I'm like, 'Yeah, OK.'"

"Wait, what?" the stunned "Tonight" host said. "What are you talking about? Did I date Nicole Kidman? Was that a date?!"

Well, not exactly. It was, according to Kidman, "a hang." She liked him, and maybe it could have led to more. But Fallon blew it — big time.

"You're there in a baseball cap … and you wouldn't talk," she recalled. "You didn't say anything … and then you put a video game on or something. I'm like, 'This is so bad.'"

Eventually, she gave up on the whole experience, which she called "embarrassing." But on Tuesday, it was Fallon who was embarrassed.

"I had no clue at all!" he said with his hands covering his face.

"I kind of left and went, 'OK! No chemistry,'" she said. "And then I was like, 'Maybe he's gay.'"

Or maybe he was just really, really oblivious.

"Wow, did you make a good decision!" he said of her choice to walk away.
