“Dancing With the Stars” just got really dull.
Despite bringing goofball antics, laughter and even magic to the ballroom bash, David Arquette became the latest contestant to be eliminated from the show. His dancing wasn’t all that bad either (at this point of the competition, that is). Judge Carrie Ann Inaba even praised his 24-point cha-cha-cha Monday night, saying that his “improvement is phenomenal.”
But being the class clown apparently doesn’t get you far enough to bask in the glory of the mirror ball trophy, something the studio audience didn’t seem pleased to learn when the elimination was announced. Just as when larger-than-life personality Carson Kressley was given the boot, the crowd erupted into boos over the results.
Not that the kooky actor was surprised by the cut. When it was revealed that he and fellow contestant Nancy Grace (who delivered a sloppy jive Monday that earned a mere 21 points) had the lowest combined judges’ scores and fan votes, Arquette quipped to pro partner Kym Johnson, “It’s curtains!” But he still gave his exit some humor, which will be missed as “Dancing” continues on its predictable path to the finale.
“There must be a mistake because this is my show! I can’t be going home!” the actor declared, poking fun at pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy’s earlier outburst and getting a good laugh from the ballroom. But then he got a bit more serious. “I came here to get to know myself, face my fears, entertain people, (give) America a chance to get to know me better, and learn to dance,” he said.
Though his exit means there will be less giggly fun (and no more of his adorable daughter, Coco, cheering so cutely in the audience), Kressley’s continued appearances – and especially Tuesday’s bit – offer hope that the competition won’t be bogged down by too much seriousness now that both he and Arquette are officially done.
A clip featuring the former “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” star likely had viewers cheering as he talked to fans backstage and in the audience. Oh, how Kressley bantered so effortlessly with everyone, from those waiting to enter the studio for the taping, to the celebs watching their loved ones compete! There were no awkward questions. No mishmash of words. In other words, he was flawless. It was hard not to wonder whether the clip was Kressley’s audition to be the next co-host. (Uh oh, Brooke Burke! Better step up your game!)
