Despite all he’s been through in the last year, Travis Barker is coping as best he can since the tragic plane crash and recent death of friend DJ AM, pal and pro skateboarder Rob Dyrdek tells PEOPLE.

He is doing “better than I would probably think anyone would really expect,” Dyrdek says. “I think he’s smart enough to know everything happens for a reason and he’s just dealing with it.”

What he’s dealing with is the harrowing experience of narrowly escaping death with Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein” last September when the Learjet carrying them crashed while taking off from Columbia, S.C., killing four people on board. The Blink 182 drummer was devastated when just last month, Goldstein was found dead in his New York City apartment.

“He’s going to be fine,” says Dyrdek, who has two clothing lines with Barker — Rogue Status and DTA.

Barker’s band Blink 182 recently canceled shows on their U.S. tour to allow Barker time to grieve. “It sucks because he’s such a good dude,” Dyrdek says of the drummer. “You know in the end, he’s here for his kids and he still has a life.”
