Katherine Heigl has been a mom for a year now, but occasionally, the leading lady has doubts that things are going the way they should.

“There’s this thing where, as a new mother, you’re just constantly going, ‘Am I doing this right?’ ” the “Life As We Know It” star told InStyle magazine for their October 2010 issue.

As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, Heigl and her husband, musician Josh Kelley, adopted their daughter, Naleigh, from Korea last September. In the new interview, Heigl, who herself has an adopted sister, said taking in a child who needed a family was a priority for her.

“I don’t know why I felt like it was so important for me to do it before we had biological children, but I felt like I had been waiting and dreaming about Naleigh for a long time,” she said.

It was so important to Heigl to adopt that before she and Josh were even engaged, she broached the subject.

“I had spoken to (Josh) about it before we got engaged and because I wanted to make sure we were on the same page — not everybody feels the way I do about adoption,” she said.

In love with their adorable tot, Heigl revealed that it was Kelley who was honored by Naleigh’s first word.

“The first thing she said was, ‘Dada,’ and then she’d call everybody else she loved ‘Dada,’ ” she said. “She actually attached to Josh much faster.”

“Life As We Know It,” Heigl’s upcoming romantic comedy co-starring Josh Duhamel, Josh Lucas and “Mad Men’s” Christina Hendricks, opens in theaters on Oct. 8.
