Heather Locklear has a court date next month on misdemeanor hit-and-run charges after an early-morning crash knocked down a street sign.

Ventura County Sheriff's Captain Eric Dowd says Locklear was cited and released Saturday after a resident reported hearing a crash around 4 a.m. An investigation led police to Locklear, whom they believe was behind the wheel at the time of the crash.

According to People.com, the actress was arrested for allegedly hitting a no-parking sign on a public street near her gated-community home, and left without notifying anyone.

Police cited the actress after they examined debris left at the scene and traced it back to her black 2005 BMW, sheriff's spokesman Ross Bonfiglio told People.com

"While Locklear was technically arrested, she was not handcuffed or taken to a station because it was just a misdemeanor charge," Bonfiglio said to People.com. "She was cooperative, but I can't give any information about any statements she made. She was cited and released. She signed a document stating she would make a court appearance."

"It appears she drove up on a curb and hit the sign," Bonfiglio told People.com. "We don't have any hard evidence that alcohol was involved. We don't know if anyone was in the car with her at the time."

Blair Berk, an attorney for the 48-year-old actress, confirmed Locklear was cited as the car's registered owner but said "it is not yet clear who was driving the vehicle."

The matter will be heard May 17 at Simi Valley Court, Dowd said.

Locklear was arrested in 2008 for driving under the influence of prescription drugs. She pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of reckless driving in January 2009.
