Whew!

Fans of "Grey's Anatomy" can rest a little easier. On Wednesday, show creator Shonda Rhimes revealed some great news when she tweeted, "Just for the record: This is not the last season of GA. Definitely. Not."

Followers of the show feared for the worst when hunky star Patrick Dempsey revealed in late May that the upcoming eighth season may be the last for his dreamy Dr. Derek Shepherd. "I do not know what's going to happen to the other characters, but for me it's done," he reportedly said.

And an earlier statement from Rhimes herself to TVLine seemed to confirm the news: The upcoming season "might be the final season for the (original cast members)," she told the website.

But there's some hope that it won't be the end of MerDer after all. (Ellen Pompeo, who plays Meredith Grey, has said she "probably would not" renew her contract after the upcoming season, and told TVLinethat "no one  has asked us to come back.") When a follower asked Rhimes on Twitter if the two stars would be back, she tweeted in response, "Hope they stay."

Fingers crossed!
