Now we know why cross dressers love him and Gwen Stefani married him.

Gavin Rossdale caused quite a stir at an intimate dinner at New York's Del Posto last night, when he waltzed in, broke out his guitar, plopped on a chair and sang for the audience in a surprise performance that had women panting and fanning themselves on a frigid night.

So much so that there was an actual reception line of ladies out the door waiting to meet the sexy singer after he finished.

Which songs put these women in such a state?

Rossdale, hired as a surprise for the dinner announcing a joint venture between Volkswagen and Fender, walked in in the middle of the meal and started singing "Love Remains the Same" from his new solo album. After joking that New York was "freezing," he said he couldn't wait to eat the food at the newly minted four-star restaurant.

"I'm literally singing for my supper," he cracked.

Celebrity chef and Del Posto owner Mario Batali was on hand to personally prepare Rossdale's meal.

The Bush frontman then went on to sing "Landslide" and ended with the group's smash, "Come Down."

Afterwards, the Stefani-less Rossdale generously spent an hour greeting all his ladies in waiting, seeming a bit flustered by all the attention.

After shaking hands and taking pics with all the women, Rossdale finally got his meal.

But he must be used to this, right?

"It's such a compliment," he told E! News.

When we prodded to see if lucky Gwen gets the special song treatment at home, he smiled:

"Oh yes, she demands it."
