France’s biggest rock star, Johnny Hallyday, has undergone surgery in Los Angeles to repair lingering trouble from a previous operation on his back.

The 66-year-old rocker’s press service said Thursday the situation is “under control.”

Hallyday, an entertainment icon for decades, underwent surgery in Paris on Nov. 26 for a herniated disc, then traveled to Los Angeles.

His press service said lesions from the initial operation “required reparative surgery.” He had also suffered an infection following the first operation.

Hallyday is on a multi-city tour called “Route 66,” a reference to his age and an homage to American rock that has inspired his music. The tour is billed as his last.

Hallyday has had a series of health problems this year, and had a cancerous polyp removed from his colon.

The singer, known for his glittery outfits and Elvis-style tight pants, is an idol in France with fans that span generations and include President Nicolas Sarkozy, a friend.

Producer Camus said on French radio that Hallyday's hospitalization could thwart his plans to spend the holidays at his chalet in Gstaad, Switzerland. His "Route 66" tour began in May and is scheduled to continue with an appearance Jan. 8 in the northern city of Amiens. The tour ends in Paris in February.
