On Free Comic Book Day May 2, millions of free comics will disappear faster than a speeding bullet from 2,340 participating stores.
"Free Comic Book Day is growing exponentially, and each year outdoes the last in every way: turnout, number of comics given away, sales in general, and smiling faces," said Gerry Gladston, co-owner of Midtown Comics in New York City. "We expect well over 1,000 fans, conservatively speaking."
Participating shops will offer up to 50 free titles for all ages, from small fry ("SpongeBob") to grown-ups ("Hip Hop Family Tree"). The publishers range from comics giants like Marvel and DC, offering tantalizing tastes of their respective Secret Wars and Convergence crossover events, to scrappy independents.
