Hoda’s sweet tooth may be getting the best of her.
Last week Hoda kept a food diary, revealing that in one day she consumed five wintergreen Life Savers, four doughnut holes, half a chocolate doughnut, a 2-inch square of brownie, 5 mini-Reese’s cups, and a Popsicle. All told, that equals 19 tablespoons of sugar, which guest Joy Bauer dramatized by trying to stuff 19 sugar packets into a wine glass.
“At least she was honest!“ said KLG, who happened to be sitting pretty with a single Kashi bar on her list of sugar intake, equivalent to only 2 teaspoons of sugar.
The sugary number-crunching was partly inspired by a recent Marie Claire article detailing the effects of sugar on the body. According to Ying Chu, Marie Claire’s health and beauty editor, a recent UCLA study examined what sugar does to the brain. “The study actually saw that sugar was creating brain fog and was hindering your memory and making you slow to reactions,” she said. Not so good if you have to keep up with co-host Kathie Lee.
“We need to work on Hoda,” said Bauer, a registered dietitian, nutritionist and author who had come to steer Hoda towards some healthier options. “I think instead of the chocolate doughnut holes, you could try mini-chocolate rice cakes.”
The suggestion brought on giggles from Kathie Lee... and a very skeptical look from Hoda.
TODAY.com contributor Jillian Eugenios doesn't believe a rice cake can stand in for a doughnut, but she's willing to take the plunge... if she's allowed to put frosting and sprinkles on the rice cake, of course.
