Hollywood movie star Tom Cruise on Tuesday dismissed suggestions that his relationship with actress Katie Holmes was fabricated as a publicity stunt.
“I have to laugh. It’s just ridiculous,” Cruise said at the European premiere for his new film “War of the Worlds” in Berlin. “Something magnificent has happened to me and something extraordinary and I’m so happy I can’t restrain myself.”
Recent polls in US Weekly and People magazines showed that more than 60 percent of those responding thought the romance between the two stars was a publicity stunt to promote their latest movies.
Holmes stars in “Batman Begins,” due for release on June 15.
The movie “War of the Worlds,” directed by Steven Spielberg, is based on a novel by H.G. Wells. Cruise plays a father trying to save his children in the story of alien conquest.
“It’s just a great story, I remember being a kid growing up and hearing about the H.G. Wells radio play and the effect that that had on society,” Cruise said.
The 1938 radio production of “War of the Worlds,” broadcast in a news bulletin format, spooked many listeners into believing that an alien invasion of Earth was actually taking place.
