Get ready, people of Los Angeles! If funnyman George Lopez gets his way, he'll be calling the shots in City of Angels in the not-so-distant future.

And that's no joke!

"The time has come!" Lopez said during a visit to TODAY Wednesday. "Listen, I can win with just fixing potholes. You know what I mean?"

The stand-up comedian and late-night TV host added, "There's a lot going on in politics, and I would love to end my career as mayor of Los Angeles."

But he's not ready for that end to come just yet: Lopez plans to wait six years before kicking off his campaign.

Why not now?

"I have to make churros to get votes!" he joked. "So it will take me six years to finish baking all the churros that I'll need: One churro, one vote, one man, one raindrop."

But really, it's no laughing matter.

"I'm absolutely serious," Lopez said of his choice.

His mayoral ambition isn't the only serious work on Lopez's mind right now: The former "Lopez Tonight" host takes a turn for the dramatic in his latest film, "Spare Parts." See him and his co-stars, Marisa Tomei and Jamie Lee Curtis, when the movie opens in theaters nationwide Jan. 16.
