R&B newcomer Ciara one-two stepped up to the plate for the 10th annual Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards Tuesday, leading the contenders with five nominations.
Strait-laced singer Amerie, “American Idol” champ Fantasia, and R&B trio Destiny’s Child followed with four nominations each. Winners will be announced during a ceremony to be taped at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium Sept. 7.
Ciara’s tune “1, 2 Step,” featuring Missy Elliott, which recently peaked at No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart, was nominated for best new artist, music video and dance cut.
Additionally, Ciara’s “Goodies” was cited for best R&B/soul album (solo), and the title track (featuring Petey Pablo) for song of the year. The tune topped the Hot 100 for seven weeks last fall, making the Atlanta teen one of the biggest breakout acts of 2004 and cementing “crunk” -- or Southern-fried party music -- as one of the hottest musical genres.
The Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards, which will air in syndication during a Sept. 17-25 window, will feature a rare TV appearance by “Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin, who will duet with Stevie Wonder. Ciara will co-host with Toni Braxton and Brian McKnight.
