Unfortunately, not everyone is in Chaz Bono's corner when he begins competition next Monday on "Dancing with the Stars."
But the show's very first transgendered contestant has at least one mega-fan: Cher!
During Bono's Wednesday appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," the author and activist, 42, got a surprise phone call from his world-famous mom, 65.
The Oscar-winning actress and singer slammed her son's critics. "If you got that excess time and that amount of hostility, I'm not so sure that I can say anything to you that would make you change your feelings," she said. "I don't know that I would have any magic words to make you feel more comfortable and to soothe you into not being terrified of my child dancing on "Dancing With The F*#%ing Stars."
But, even with a world-class entertainer mom, Bono admitted dancing didn't come easily at first. "My first dance is pretty good," he told Ellen DeGeneres. "The cha cha. The quickstep gives me nightmares but I'm starting to feel pretty confident. We did it for some of the other people on the show today and they seem to really like it."
Joked Cher: "I got to tell you something. You doing this dance is about as scary as you making the 'change'!"
