Cheers from frenzied ‘Snakes’ fans

The key is seeing it with a big, enthusiastic, over-the-top audience

You can’t escape the “Snakes on a Plane” hype. As I waited for the lights to lower, I felt hopeful, but doubtful that the film would live up to all the hoopla.

I realized I was in for the flight of my life as about 25 people raised their hands when asked who had been waiting over 24 hours to get good seats. Soon a chant of “Snakes on a Plane” began, and before long it was time for take-off. Maybe it was the hissing, or perhaps the tossing of rubber snakes throughout the audience. It could have been the fact that I was sitting amidst a group of people rooting for the reptiles. But, before I knew it, I was hollering — and occasionally screaming — along with the rest of the crowd.

Many of our readers experienced similar moments at theaters across the nation. Here’s what a few of you had to say about the motherf---ers:

Well worth the price of admissionI had been looking forward to seeing this movie ever since I heard about the title, so I got tickets to a sneak preview last night. The theater was filled with loud teenagers, chanting for the film and armed with plastic snakes which were thrown around the room as soon as the lights went out. After booing or cheering for different coming attractions, we all cheered when “Snakes” began. The volume of that roar was only surpassed by the ruckus when Sammy L. first appeared on screen. From then on in, everyone enjoyed the movie, hissing like snakes and cheering for the film's protagonists, again erupting when Jackson uttered those now famous words, “I've had it with these motherf---ing snakes on this motherf---ing plane!” “Snakes on a Plane” was great, and the experience was well worth the price of admission. —Dan

See it with an audienceWhen I went to see the movie on Thursday night at 10 p.m., there were people leading cheers (“I say ‘Snakes,’ you say ‘Plane’”), people wearing snakes around their necks, and people hissing like a snake throughout the movie. Watching this movie in an empty theatre would have been a completely different experience. Since I didn't, it was the most fun that I've ever had at a movie theatre. It won't win any Oscars, but it sure will be the hot topic of discussion for movie goers for a long time. —Drew

Logic intrudesOf course, on any commercial jet the crew can change the cabin temperature, not to mention the temperature in the cargo holds, so they could just lower the temperature and put the cold-blooded little beasties to sleep! You would be cold but alive touching down at LAX. Bring your disbelief suspenders... —Douglas

Tears on a plane?Snakes is a deeply moving movie experience full of heartfelt emotion, and of a rare sincerity one rarely views these days. Bring the tissue! —Brandon

Next up: ‘geriatric1927 on a Plane’
The audience is what makes this movie a 110 percent theater-going experience. Don't miss out. It will be a looooong while before this phenomenon is equaled. Only if geriatric1927 of YouTube fame starred in a movie (‘SoaP2’ maybe?) would a film surpass what ‘SoaP’ has accomplished. —
