Britney Spears kicked off her long-anticipated Las Vegas show on Friday, and we're pleased to announce: it's a hit! Britney: Piece of Me, which is scheduled to run for two years at Planet Hollywood, wowed critics with its dazzling special effects, nonstop dance numbers, and greatest-hits set list. Read on for clips and details!
Piece of Me turns out to be a 90-minute concert, featuring 24 songs, 14 dancers, a live band, and seven costume changes. The songs span her career, with numbers from all of Britney's albums, including "Baby One More Time," "Toxic," "Stronger," "Circus," "Till the World Ends" and her current single, "Perfume." The show piles on the visual spectacle, too, with lavish sets, pyrotechnics, onstage rain and acrobatic feats. During at least two points in the show, Britney flies through the air. Bet you won't see Celine Dion do that!
One big question before Friday was whether Britney would sing live (and if so, whether she was capable of that level of performance). The official response is that Britney is singing along to a backing track. Reviewers say that at some points, she was clearly lip-syncing, but at other times, she was obviously singing live. Given the exhausting-looking choreography, that may end up being the best of both worlds.
Spears certainly had no shortage of love and support on her opening night. Katy Perry, Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, DJ Pauly D, Mario Lopez and Adam Lambert were all in attendance.
Looks like it was a good time all around. Some critics voiced a dissenting opinion, saying that Spears seemed to be going through the motions. But most agreed that those motions were terrific entertainment.
Congratulations, Britney—here's to two more years of showstoppers!
