Before Britney Spears was cutting her hair off, she was pulling it out.

The troubled pop star was behaving erratically the week before she checked herself into rehab yesterday.

“She would get into bed with [her sons] and talk about moving away and living in a world that’s all their own,” a “pal” told Life & Style Weekly. “It’s so sad. She’s been crying all the time and had been pulling out small sections of her hair.”

Spears was distraught and humiliated by her exes, according to the mag, including Justin Timberlake and Kevin Federline bonding at the Grammys and former boyfriend Isaac Cohen allegedly selling tidbits about their romance to a tab.

“Why did he share our secrets?” Spears said of Cohen, reports L&S, and of Federline, sobbed, “Why did he cheat on me? He said he loved me!”

The mag reports that a “hysterical” Spears was rushed to Cedars Sinai Medical Center and given a sedative and antidepressants.

An alleged brief stay in rehab last week — which was denied by her rep — was cut short, apparently because Spears couldn’t bear to be away from her sons.

“She couldn’t be separated from the kids any longer,” the pal told L&S. “She also made it clear she wasn’t ready for rehab.”

J.Lo on ‘American Idol’?Will Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony do a cameo on “American Idol?”

The couple is in talks to appear as musical guests on the hit show, according to the upcoming issue of Star — following in the footsteps of other celebrity guests including Prince and Diana Ross. Access Hollywood reported Wednesday that J. Lo would appear on the show on April 11.

“It was Jennifer and Marc who approached ‘American Idol,’ not the other way around,” a source told the tab. “They are currently in talks with the show’s executive producer, Nigel Lythgoe. Getting them on the show would be a huge deal — they’d definitely be the big surprise of the season. Prince was such a sensational guest last season, they knew they’d have to step it up for Season 6!”

Notes from all overTom Cruise is exerting Cruise control in his household. The “Top Gun” star axed several members of his domestic staff, including a personal assistant and a caterer, according to Us. “They made minor mistakes,” an insider told the mag. “Tom was being irrational.” Meanwhile, Cruise’s wife and ex-wife had an unplanned meeting, when Katie Holmes and Nicole Kidman were both dining at the Polo Lounge in Beverly Hills. “Nicole went up to Katie’s table briefly and said hello,” another diner told the mag. “They were both very polite.”   . . .Brandy’s hopes of hooking up with her ex have been dashed. The R&B queen, who is facing questions about her alleged role in a fatal car crash, wanted to reconcile with Quentin Richardson, but the New York Knicks star has his sights set on actress Regina King, according to In Touch Weekly, which reports that they two “danced seductively” at rapper Ludacris’ post-Grammy part on February 11. “Everyone watched them,” a partygoer told the mag. “They were dancing up against each other and grinding as she rubbed his chest. It was something.”  . . . Iggy Pop says it’s not as easy to feel good as it once was. “To feel good when I was 21, all I had to do was to smoke a joint,” the 59-year-old rock dinosaur tells the March issue of Spin. “Now I have to turn off my phones, do tai chi for an hour, drink a strong cup of coffee, and stay away from bad people, so I can feel good for an hour or two — knowing when it ends, I’m gonna feel like the miserable 59-year old prick that I actually am.”
