Celebrities traditionally announce wedding news via their representatives, but for one star, the rep route just wasn't traditional enough.

The engagement of "Sherlock" star Benedict Cumberbatch, who's famous for keeping his private life private, and theater director and actress Sophie Hunter was announced among similar, non-celebrity good news in the Forthcoming Marriages section of U.K. paper The Times.

The 38-year-old actor met Hunter, 36, in 2009, when the two starred in the drama "Burlesque Fairytales."

While Cumberbatch's rep didn't get to break the news on Wednesday morning, a statement later confirmed it.

"I am delighted to confirm this morning’s announcement that Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter are engaged," the rep told The Telegraph.

Earlier this year, when asked about settling down, Cumberbatch said, "I can imagine I'll look back at this point in my life and think, 'Wow that was really extraordinary.' But at the same time I hope I'm looking back and going, 'Oh, that was the moment I got on with life and realized things beyond myself."

No word yet on when the couple plans to tie the knot.
