Yes, that's Lorde in angel wings, Elton John covered in butterflies, and Kylie Minogue floating off in a bubble. More than 20 musical superstars joined forces with the BBC for a lovely remake of the Beach Boys' 1966 hit, "God Only Knows," and Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson leads the show.
In addition to John, Lorde and Minogue, Wilson is joined by plenty of other musicians from all genres. One Direction shows up to rep the Millennial generation. Brian May of Queen rocks a balcony full of amps. Dave Grohl appears to be floating in the clouds, while diamonds float around Stevie Wonder. Chris Martin, Pharrell Williams, Chrissie Hynde, Florence Welch and others also contribute to the tune. And the Tees Valley Youth Choir and 80-piece BBC Concert Orchestra help put it all together.
"All of the artists did such a beautiful job I can’t thank them enough," Wilson told the BBC. "I’m just honored that 'God Only Knows' was chosen. 'God Only Knows' is a very special song. An extremely spiritual song and one of the best I’ve ever written.”
The video was filmed in London's Alexandra Palace Theatre, home of the first-ever BBC broadcast nearly a century ago.
The single is available for download, with proceeds going to the BBC's Children in Need charity, and is helping launch the BBC's new music initiative, BBC Music.
The BBC has collected a cadre of singing stars for charity before. Their 1997 charity single, a take on Lou Reed's "Perfect Day," hit No. 1 in the U.K. for three weeks.
