Hundreds of people gathered to say goodbye in San Diego to a hometown son.

Julien Hug, the former Bachelorette contestant who took his own life last week, was remembered at a public memorial Friday afternoon at a church in Rancho Sante Fe, where Hug and his family are well-known restaurateurs.

The Hug family "very much appreciates the outpouring of love and support from friends and the larger community," Rev. Jack Baca of the Village Church told the La Jolla Light before the service. "We're planning to seat as many people as we possibly can."

"Some of us never saw this coming or anything," said Julien's father, Bertrand Hug. "He was the most beautiful person inside and out, he was a classic guy, he was a gentle soul."

Julien was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Nov. 3 in a remote area near the San Bernardino National Forest, about 90 miles south of Los Angeles, a few days after being reported missing.

The 35-year-old, who took a shot at reality-TV love on Jillian Harris' season of The Bachelorette, left notes for his parents and girlfriend explaining his descent into depression.
