The house where author Cormac McCarthy grew up has been destroyed by a fire.

The blaze was discovered by neighbors Tuesday and firefighters found flames shooting from the upper floor of the two-story house, according to The Knoxville News-Sentinel.

The house was abandoned. It was included on a list of endangered places by the preservation group Knox Heritage.

Investigators hadn't determined a cause. Officials said there have been reports of homeless people on the property but that no one was at the home when firefighters arrived.

McCarthy's family moved into the house in 1937 when he was 4 and he lived there for 40 years.

McCarthy won a Pulitzer for his 2007 novel "The Road." His other works include "All the Pretty Horses" and "No Country for Old Men."
