Alex Trebek raps clues on 'Jeopardy'

Answer: The Internet goes crazy. Question: What happens when Alex Trebek, the longtime straight-faced host of TV game show "Jeopardy!" has an entire category of rap lyrics to read to his contestants?

The "It's a Rap" category showed up on Monday night's episode during Double Jeopardy, and featured Trebek — who, as far as we know, has no MC experience outside this show — doing his best to read lyrics such as Grandmaster Flash's "Don't push me, 'cause I'm close to the edge/I'm trying not to lose my head" (from "The Message") and The Beastie Boys' "Another plane, another train/Another bottle in the brain" from "No Sleep 'Till Brooklyn."

Though Trebek was of course a pro throughout the category, viewers went bananas and quickly made #AlexTrebek a trending topic on Twitter.

It also turned out to be trending on TODAY, when the anchors sat down to guess the answers from the clips of Trebek's raps on Tuesday morning. Carson Daly and visiting "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest got into the flavor of the moment, spontaneously sliding into Young MC's "Bust a Move" lyrics: "This here's a jam for all the fellas/Tryin' to do what those ladies tell us ..." and admittedly, the pair were pretty smooth as a duet team.

But no one knew the right question to the final rapped answer: " 'You go ooh and ahh when I jump in my car/ People treat me like' this hall of fame L.A. Lakers center." Only Al Roker had the right name, which was ... spoiler alert! ... Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

"A little bit of a trick question, there," said Roker.

Trebek's raps have caught viewers' attention before. Fans have been posting snippets of him reading rap lyrics as category answers for years. But this time, his mad skillz attracted special attention from admiring fans and worried tweeters, some of who saw the host's name trending and thought he had passed on. No way. Alex Trebek lives to rap and host "Jeopardy!" another day.
