Kenneth Noland, an artist who became prominent in an abstract expressionist style called color field painting, has died at his home in coastal Maine. He was 85.

His wife, Paige Rense, editor-in-chief of Architectural Digest, confirmed the death through a spokeswoman. Noland died Tuesday from cancer in his home in Port Clyde.

Noland, who was born in Asheville, N.C., was a key painter in the style known as color field, which is characterized by large expanses of color either painted, stained or poured on canvas.

Michael Komanecky from the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine, says Noland's paintings were marked by "dynamic forms and subtle and sometimes striking interplays of colors."
