According to New Zealand's Department of Conservation, the seal had traveled from the nearby harbor, across a road, up a driveway, through a cat door and into the property owner's living room, where it made itself comfortable on the couch.

"I thought, 'I'm hallucinating; this is just wrong,'" said Annette Swoffer, the woman who owns the couch-turned-seal bed, to the New Zealand Herald. "Then it looks at me with those huge brown eyes. It was so cute, but I didn't touch it because you don't with wild animals." The seal pup may have become disoriented while traveling; occasionally they've been known to wander inland, said the Department of Conservation, while their mothers are away foraging for food.
