TODAY takes on the story of Botox Mom -- make that Fauxtox Mom -- this morning.

The California woman who gained media notoriety by claiming to inject her 8-year-old daughter with Botox now says she made it all up -- for money. As Ann Curry says, the story is "disturbing on so many levels."

San Francisco may pursue legal action against the woman, who actually lives in Los Angeles, for wasting the city's time and money. As one official points out, the resources they spent investigating these fake claims should have been dedicated to helping children who are really in danger.

Fauxtox Mom tells gossip website TMZ she was manipulated and taken advantage of. Whichever version of her story is true, wouldn't that description better suit her poor daughter -- who was either injected with botulism toxin, or forced to participate in an elaborate public lie?

What's the truth? More than 20,000 of you voted in our TODAY Moms poll (you can still vote here): 5 percent think she made up her Botox story, 57 percent think she's lying now, and 38 percent say you don't care, you just want her to go away!
