Birds, vampires and jeggings, oh my! According to Parents magazine, these are some of the top trends for families for 2011. The editor of Parents joined Kathie Lee and Hoda on TODAY’s fourth hour to talk about what we’ll be wearing and doing this year. Check out Parents.com for the full list of 11 trends for 2011, and read on for the highlights:
Birds: Maybe it’s the Twitter effect? Owls are so 2010, but little birds are hot now – expect to see smaller feathered friends on nursery décor, stuffed animals and kids’ clothes. TODAY Moms thinks: Gotta love a trend that’s cute and gender-neutral.
3D everywhere: Laptops, cameras, camcorders, video games… those funky glasses aren’t just for movie theaters anymore. TODAY Moms thinks: Have fun, but be careful. Nintendo just issued a warning that too much 3D viewing can damage the eyes, especially in children younger than 6.
Jeggings: So hip and so comfy, they’re a “must-have” in kid couture this year, according to Parents. TODAY Moms thinks: Adorable on tots, unfortunate on grown women. Leave them to the babies!
Video chatting: Skype reportedly has new upgrades coming that will make it even easier to use their free video-chat service. Great for parents who have to travel for work. TODAY Moms thinks: Anything that brings the family closer together is great… until your teenager steals it to video chat with her boyfriend.
Spooky toys: With teens (and their moms) swooning over the Twilight movies and books, toys are taking a cue and going spooky, with adorable little vampire bat stuffed animals and “spooky” picture books. TODAY Moms thinks: Up all night, drains the life out of you – vampires and kids are a perfect match. (Kidding!)
Movies from classic tales: Animated films this year will be all about the classics, from nursery rhymes to Shakespeare. Parents mag is particularly excited about the garden-gnome-themed “Gnomeo & Juliet,” coming out in February. TODAY Moms thinks: Oh dear. They do know how “Romeo & Juliet” ends, right?
Mommy & Me Beauty: Busy moms end up using baby products anyway, so companies are catching on and making yummy lines for both mom and baby. California Baby is unveiling a new all-natural line for pregnant women, and Om Aroma is releasing an Organic Baby Set. TODAY Moms thinks: Mom-and-baby organic skin care? Sweet! Mom-and-daughter tanning? Scary.
