Colombian superstar musician Shakira and her soccer star partner Gerard Piqué have welcomed their second son into the world, two years after giving birth to son Milan.
The new parents announced the birth in a statement on Shakira's website Friday morning:
We are happy to announce the birth of Sasha Piqué Mebarak, son of Shakira Mebarak and Gerard Piqué, born January 29 at 9:54pm, in Barcelona. The name Sasha is of Greek and Russian descent and means “defender of mankind” and “warrior.” The hospital confirmed that both mother and child are in excellent health.
Billboard.com had reported earlier that the baby was born in a scheduled cesarean section in a private hospital, the same hospital where Milan was born on Jan. 22, 2013. The magazine said that the pair had reserved the entire floor of the hospital.
Shakira, 37, and Piqué, 27, began dating in 2010. The couple made their second baby shower a worldwide event to raise money for UNICEF, setting up a web page to provide a way for well-wishers to purchase "inspired gifts" for needy children.
The new addition to the family will become an associate member of Piqué's team FC Barcelona — Milan already has that honor — Goal.com added.
