NBA All-Star Scottie Pippen announced the death of his oldest son, Antron, on social media Monday.
"I’m heartbroken to share that yesterday, I said goodbye to my firstborn son Antron," the basketball Hall of Famer wrote on Instagram alongside a carousel of photos celebrating the life of 33-year-old Antron. "The two of us shared a love for basketball and we had countless conversations about the game.
Antron suffered from chronic asthma and if he hadn’t had it, I truly believe he would've made it to the NBA. He never let that get him down, though—Antron stayed positive and worked hard, and I am so proud of the man that he became."
The retired athlete asked his community to keep his first wife and Antron's mother, Karen McCollum, top of mind as they mourned their loss.
"Please keep his mom, Karen, and all of his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers. A kind heart and beautiful soul gone way too soon. I love you, son, rest easy until we meet again."
Antron is the oldest of Pippen's eight children and his cause of death remains unknown.
Following the news, comments of love and support from Pippen's community poured in.
"Antron was such a special guy and I am honored that I got to know him. I know he was loved and I am praying for your whole family Scottie. And karen of course. We love you and if there is anything we can do. JUST say it. We love you so much. Prayers for all," Loren Ridinger wrote.
Estranged wife Larsa Pippen, who is the mother to four of Pippen's children, shared a heartbreaking tribute to her stepson on Instagram stories.
Pippen is also dad to Taylor, Sierra, Scotty Jr., Preston, Justin, and Sophia. His son Tyler, a twin to Taylor with former girlfriend Sonya Roby, passed away nine days after birth in 1994.
